Au Revoir Oleanna!

Well, the evening started off on a high note; nice dinner at Bond 45. As we walked down 45th Street we realized that after tonight we can say we have seen everything playing on W 45th St. Bravo for us!

The Golden is a nice theatre, comfortable seats, even though we were not on the aisle, which is what we normally prefer. Cathy remarked on how nice the set looked and we were prepared for an enjoyable performance. We knew we were in trouble when five minutes after the show started, Jeff was nodding off. Our seat-mates were thrilled he did NOT snore.

To say that the beginning of this show was boring is an understatement. Wish we could say that it got better. The good news is that at least there was enough action to stay awake after the first half hour.

Cathy was right that the set was beautiful but the set designer, Neil Patel must have been attacked by electric shades as a child - there is no other explanation that we can think of for the annoying shades that went up and down, quite noisily, between the play's scenes.

David Mamet is a wonderful writer, with such shows as November, Speed the Plow and Glengarry Glen Ross to his credit. We loved Speed the Plow and we can't to see Race. David, can you please call us tomorrow, either of our cell phones will be fine, or just email us at houseseats@yahoo.com because we are sooooooo confused. Not often that we walk out of a theatre saying "Huh?" but we did this time!

Performances by Bill Pullman and Julia Stiles were outstanding and Jeff commented that they were quite well cast, albeit in roles that he did not understand (Cathy said she did???? This is a play about sexual harassment that takes 86 of its 90 minutes to get to that point and even then it seems more like it is about intellectual frustration than sexual harassment.

Too little, too late, David.

No wonder 20% of the seats were empty and the show is closing in a few weeks. Next up is the off Broadway production of Zero Hour - stay tuned and have a very happy Thanksgiving. Don't eat too much!
